Protocalls for Conference calls
- Call in before class begins if possible (as soon as possible
if You have to log in late).
- Choose the Flash option rather than the RealPlayer option
if You are planning to call in, because the delay is shorter.
- We suggest that if You want to watch the video, mute the
computer's volume and receive the audio over the phone line.
The audio and video will not be quite synchronized, but then
You will be hearing the audio in real time.
- Definitely mute the computer's volume if You are talking
on the phone (or there will be feedback problems).
- Consider muting the telephone when just listening, so that
any incidental noises from your end of the line will not be
broadcast to the classroom.

This page contains a list of all the courses which have live-streaming
during the semester. Once on the page, click on the link to your
course. Then you will need to select a connection speed and choose
between Real and Flash video. Note: Real tends to be delayed 10-15
seconds from real time; Flash tends to be delayed 1-5 seconds,
so you may prefer Flash if you plan to call in and participate
in the live session. A countdown message will appear on the screen
an hour before beginning of the session. There will be no video
available until about 1 minute before the session.

Videos of Sections should be available a few days after each Section
meeting. Dialogues recorded from previous Heroes course will be

Multimedia
requires a separate user name and password, available from Professor
Nagy and the Teaching Fellows.
The true "hero"
of this course is the logos or "word" of logical
reasoning, as activated by Socratic dialogue. The logos of dialogue
requires careful thinking, realized in close reading and reflective
writing. The last "word" to be read in the course will
come from Plato's memories of the last days of Socrates.
These memories depend on a thorough understanding of the concept
of the hero in all its varieties throughout the history of Greek
civilization. This course is driven by a sequence of dialogues
that lead to such an understanding, guiding the attentive reader
through many of the major works of the ancient Greek Classics,
from Homer to Plato.
